A home for Rubia: adopting an older dog

We would like to introduce Rubia, a podenco mix and one of our oldest residents. In 2000, Rubia and her mother, Chica, found shelter at our refuge after being abandoned on the streets. Rubia was one of a litter of five at the time. All her siblings found homes but no one wanted Rubia.

Urgent News

This year has been particularly troublesome as the number of abandoned dogs continues to increase. Unfortunately, the number of people willing to adopt or foster a dog has not improved and therefore, our dogs are staying longer at the refuge. At the moment, our refuge is filled to maximum capacity and we simply do not have room for any more dogs. Having too many dogs becomes a safety issue as it creates a very dangerous situation for our dogs. In light of this, we regrettably cannot accept any more dogs until further notice. We are in desperate need of people willing to adopt or foster a dog as this would make room at the refuge for other dogs. If you are interested in adopting or fostering a dog, please call Pam at 952 51 46 71 or contact us at aparivspain@gmail.com.

A Very Special Thanks

We would like to acknowledge the generous donations of some very special people. Our friends in Northern Ireland, Christine and Stephen, raised 1020 pounds on behalf of A.P.A.Ri.V. These funds helped ensure the health of our dogs this year as it enabled us to purchase the necessary vaccines. Brian Groves of SATRA International and Graham Preston in the UK listened to our concerns about our dogs contacting leishmaniosis. With their donations of 2000 euros and 500 euros, we purchased enough Scalibor collars for the next 18 months which will significantly reduce the chances of and help prevent our dogs from contacting this very serious disease. On behalf of our association and all our dogs, we extend our sincere gratitude!

Lovely puppies, looking for a home!

Need we say more? Wagging tiny tails, that soft, almost whinnying bark that small puppies have. Born on March 23, 2011, these adorable pups are looking for a good home. Somebody please adopt these little guys before I take them all home with me!

NEW KENNELS

The men have been very busy building new kennels for some of our dogs. These kennels will have proper roofs to keep the dogs dry in the rainy winter months. The dogs love to curl up in their beds in their brand new accommodations! Many thanks to Barry, Alan, John, Tony and Terry for all their hard work.

WE NEED HELP TRANSPORTING OUR DOGS

As everyone knows, our dream is to find suitable new homes for each of our dogs at the Apariv refuge. Most of our dogs travel to Germany to start their new lives. The dogs are not allowed to fly without someone accompanying them on the flight. Too often these dogs have to wait several weeks-and sometimes months- before an appropriate flight is found for them. The person accompanying the dogs doesn’t have to do too much! There will be an Apariv volunteer at Malaga airport, and another one contact waiting in Germany.

If you are traveling to Germany and are interested in helping transport our dogs, please call Pam at 952 51 46 71 or email us at aparivspain@gmail.com

Raising the Roof

Members, friends and guests of A.P.A.Ri.V. celebrated the “wearing of the green” at Restaurante La Plata in Benajarafe on March 17, 2011. Nearly 70 people attended the dinner-dance to help raise money to complete the roofing at the refuge. After enjoying a three course meal, the evening was spent dancing and singing some familiar Irish ballards. Wonderful prizes were donated by members, friends and local businesses. As a result of the generosity of all who attended and supported the event, a total of 725 euros was raised! With these funds, we should be able to finish the roofing before next winter’s rains. On behalf of A.P.A.Ri.V. and all the dogs at the refuge, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone. Our very special thanks to Peter Stoner who donated his time and talent to provide the music for the evening.

Flossie’s very happy ending!

Remember Flossie, the sad sack of bones one of our volunteers found wandering through the mountains? (in case you missed it, here’s the video) Well, she perked up considerably in the last month or so and, even better, she has found her perfect new home, on a wonderful farm!
