July 16th Party with Live Music

The evening of July 16th will be filled with the sound of live musical entertainment and disco music at Los Piratas in Moclinejo for the benefit of A.P.A.Ri.V. The fun will begin around 7:00 p.m and last until the wee hours of the morning. The entrance fee is 7.50 euros per person. Food and drink are also available and can be purchased separately. Tickets for the raffle can be purchased for your chance to win great prizes. A busy weekend

We gave the refuge a good clean this weekend, sweeping out and washing out their houses. We bathed Millie, Elsie, Blondy and many more, they loved it!. Towards the end of our working day today a lovely little dog arrived at the refuge. She had been living with her owners for 4 years and has only had human contact!!, now she is at the refuge with over 50 dogs and very frightened, her name is Tina.

We need a new generator.

Just as we thought things were progessing nicely, our generator failed. The refuge does not have its own electricity so we rely on the generator as our sole source of electrical power. Without it, we are unable to pump water from the well or to complete our projects such as the new front to the refuge. We are asking whether anyone has a generator that they are willing to donate to the association. If you can help us, please contact us through this website or call 657 219 269.

Last October whilst out cycling my husband came across a starving puppy. Knowing I help out at the local dog rescue he came home and asked if we could take it into the refuge – that’s if we could catch it, of course. When we returned to the spot there were, infact, two puppies who were so skinny and obviously not far away from death. They came with us without any struggle and stayed with us at our house for a month, whilst they gained strength and whilst all their innoculations took effect. Ruby and Toby as we called them quickly made friends with our own dog Danny and joined him on his walks, copying everything he did. Of course, we fell in love with them, but knew it would be impossible to keep them permanently as we were leaving to spend a couple of months in UK and they had no pet passport. When the day came that they had to go to the rescue, I cried and cried. But the wonderful people at APARIV sent daily messages of their progress and how they soon fitted in and were happy in their environment. BUT the rescue is not a home.

The refuge has water!

One of our dreams has come true! During the past few months, we made it a priority to have a proper water system at the refuge to ensure an adequate supply of water. Until now, the volunteers have had to transport the water from their homess to the refuge in water bottles. We use an average of 1000 liters of water each week just for drinking water for the dogs. In the height of the summer, we use much more– and that does not include the use of water for cleaning, bathing the dogs and other general use. With the summer heat fast approaching, a much larger cistern was need to hold more water than the 1000 liter tank we already had. That day is finally here! Within the last two weeks, a platform was built for a new 5000 liter cistern and the new cistern was delivered. The hoses are all connected and the water is running through the taps! To add to our good fortune, the well is full of water from the heavy winter rains and we have been able to pump the water from the well into the cistern. The dogs are already being bathed and their houses are being cleaned.

We cannot express our gratitude for all those that help make this happen. In large part, the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration raised the bulk of the money needed to successfully complete this critical project. Thanks also to those who devoted their time and physical labor to get the water cistern in place and working. On to the next dream!!

A Great St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

Members, friends and guests of A.P.A.Ri.V. celebrated the “wearing of the green” in fine fashion during its fundraising event last night at Lo Pepe Molina’s in Almayate. Nearly 100 people attended the dinner-dance to help raise money for a much needed water system at the refuge. After enjoying a three course meal, the rest of the evening was spent dancing as well as singing to some good old Irish ballards. We had wonderful prizes donated by members, friends and local businesses for our raffle. As a result of the generosity of all who attended and supported the event, a total of 1120 euros was raised! With these funds, our plan to have an adequate water system for the dogs is well on its way.On behalf of A.P.A.Ri.V. and all the dogs at the refuge, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone. Our very special thanks to Peter Stoner who donated both his time and his talent to provide the music for the evening. We hope to see you soon!

Elsie´s trip to the vets

I took Elsie to the vets this morning for a blood test, she was such a good girl. She was so good in the car, it was as if she is used to being driven around. She was intrigued when she met the vet´s cat, who only has two front legs due do an accident. She was so sweet with her, she kept going up to her face and staring at her!. She was a little bit anxious when they did the blood test but after she was really happy. She had a good brush when we returned to the refuge and a lot of her knots were cut out of her fur, so she is looking much better now. She is such a friendly dog and needs lot of cuddles, bless her.
